Friend of mine just brought his 2012 Fiat to the dealer because the oil light came on.
According to him, they say he needs a new engine because the rear main seal failed. I have no further details on it at the moment and he is out of warranty but is going to see if they will still honor it.
I did some quick research and it looks like this a known problem in the 500 community. Wondering if anyone out there in Oppo-land has had the same misfortune?

a rear main seal does not necessitate a new engine, not unless the engine has already blown up.

that was my thinking as well, should be like a $20 seal you press in, boom, fixed.

Well, oil light came on may = sufficient loss to seriously trash a few things, particularly if it's been quite low for a while due to the seal failure. Blown up, no, but I wouldn't like to see his valve gear and his main bearings are probably a time bomb.

on a car that new, I'd expect a repair of an engine not a replacement.

True, but we don't know the extent of the damage, the particular dealer's tendencies toward CYA and labor rates, and the fragility of the engine. Offhand there could be anything from serious cam erosion to tracked mains going on, and at some point repair is something I'd expect them to be gunshy over.

500 driver here. That's news to me. I know the L is getting a bad rep for all kind of stuff, but mostly auto trans related, from what I hear.

Yeah exactly, I haven't pressed him for more information yet. So who knows what state the engine is in. I know he has a long commute so the car probably has ~60-70,000 miles on it.

Well, after you disconnect the axles, drain all the fluids, unplug all the electrics, pull the engine and transmission, separate the engine from the transmission, remove the clutch components, remove the flywheel, remove the rear engine plate then yeah...press in that $20 seal and boom, fixed.

well obviously you have to get to it, but its far from a new engine.

Yeah, I know you know the deal.
Just...rear engine seals. So much pain for such an inexpensive part.
Hate them.

A quick google search tells me 2012 was a bad year for the Fiat 500. Lots of oil related problems.

Thats why I haven't done mine yet, though for me its just unbolting the cross member, unbolting the trans and dropping the transmission

Yeah, on my spitfire I don't even have to jack the car up. I just remove the passenger seat, take out the front carpet and remove the transmission tunnel. (not actually me or my car, btw)
Still hate rear engine seals though.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I deduced as well.
